Tech Q&A: How to Do a System Restore On Your Computer

Question from Sllyye Baba.:  Hello Simmy. Thanks for all the great computer tips you post. They are a BIG help!! Now it’s my turn to ask a question.

I have been having big issues with the registry keys and installed programs on my HP laptops, Most of them are malfunctioning. Please i need simple guidelines or steps on how to do system restore on my laptop.

Simmyideas‘s answer:  Don’t worry Sllyye, your PC will be restored back to previous ways, Simply follow the steps below.

System Restore is a recovery tool in Windows that allows you to reverse certain kinds of changes made to the operating system.

System Restore is used to return important Windows files and settings – like drivers, registry keys, system files, installed programs, and more – back to previous versions and settings.

Think of System Restore as an “undo” feature for the most important parts of Microsoft Windows.

  • Navigate to the Start -> All Programs ->Accessories -> System Tools program group.
  • Click on the System Restore program icon.
  • Click Next > on the Restore system files and settings window that should have appeared on screen.
  • Choose the restore point that you want to use. Ideally, you’d want to choose the one just prior to noticing the problem you’re trying to undo, but not any further back.Any restore points that you created, scheduled restore points that Windows 7 created, and those created automatically during the installation of certain programs will be listed here. You can not use System Restore to undo Windows 7 changes to a date that a restore point does not exist for.
  • Click Next >.
  • Click Finish on the Confirm your restore point window to begin the System Restore.
  • Click Yes to the Once started, System Restore cannot be interrupted. Do you want to continue? dialog box.
  • System Restore will now restore Windows 7 to the state that was recorded in the restore point you chose in Step 4.
  • Immediately after logging in to Windows 7 after the reboot, you should see a message that System Restore completed successfully.
  • Click Close.
  • Check to see if whatever Windows 7 problem you were troubleshooting has been corrected by this System Restore. If the problem still persists, you can repeat the steps above and choose another restore point if one is available.

If this restoration caused a problem, you can always undo this particular System Restore.

I hope this helps Sllyye. Good luck!
