Mozilla has switched Firefox to a rapid release development cycle which means New versions will come more frequently. The non-profit organization has promised to push out a New stable build every six weeks. Mozilla Firefox 66 Beta 8 gives you a sneak peek at the next version of Firefox six weeks ahead of its final release, offering a relatively stable build that’s not quite ready for primetime, but still pretty solidMozilla Firefox 66

Whereas Firefox Developer installs as a completely separate application alongside your existing Firefox installation, Firebox Beta will replace the stable build. Should you subsequently wish to go back to the safer version, you’ll need to manually download the stable version and install it over the top of the beta build.

Confirm which build you have by selecting About Firefox from the Firefox menu or button (it’s inside the Help menu if using the Firefox button).

The latest Mozilla Firefox 66 Beta 8 is now available for testing on Windows, Mac, Linux and Android. This beta includes performance enhancements that improve the browsing experience for users and enable Developers to create faster Web apps and websites.

What’s New To Mozilla Firefox 66 Beta 8:

New

  • On macOS, WebGL power preferences allow non-performance-critical applications and applets to request the low-power GPU instead of the high-power GPU in multi-GPU systems
  • Improved Windows 10 integration: your Firefox theme now matches your OS Dark / Light mode
  • WebExtensions now run in their own process on Linux
  • Faster tab switching in the majority of cases for our macOS users
  • Improved the reactivity of Firefox on macOS
  • Increased content processes to 8
  • Added capability to search through open tabs from the tab overflow menu
  • New backend for the storage.local WebExtensions API, providing I/O performance improvements when the extension updates a small subset of the stored data
  • WebExtension keyboard shortcuts can now be managed or overridden from about:addons
  • Improved scrolling behavior: Firefox will now attempt to keep content from jumping around while a page is loading by supporting scroll anchoring
  • New about:privatebrowsing with search
  • Basic macOS touchbar support
  • A certificate error page now notifies the user of the name of the certificate issuer that breaks HTTPs connections on intercepted connections to help troubleshooting possible anti-virus software issues.

Changed

  • In the Library, the Open in Sidebar feature for individual bookmarks was removed
  • Never check for updates option removed from about:preferences. If a substitute is needed, we recommend using the DisableAppUpdate enterprise policy
  • Firefox now warns about having multiple windows/tabs open when quitting from the main menu.
  • The Ctrl+Tab shortcut now displays thumbnail previews of your tabs and cycles through tabs in recently used order. This new default behavior is activated only in new profiles and can be changed in your preferences
  • The build infrastructure of Firefox on Windows moved to the Clang tool chain, bringing important performance gains
