Type faster than a controller – How to Use a Keyboard or Mouse on a PS5
This article explains how to connect keyboard or mouse to PS5, as well as what limitations may be involved with the process.
What to Know:
- There’s no need for a keyboard and mouse adapter for PlayStation 5.
- Simply plug the keyboard and mouse into the game console to use it.
- You can’t play online games against other console players using this method.
How to Connect a Keyboard and Mouse to Your PlayStation 5
It’s super simple (and useful) to use a keyboard and mouse with your PlayStation 5. Here’s how to do it.
Get a keyboard and mouse.
If you just want to use a keyboard or mouse rather than both, you can choose to do that too. It’s not compulsory to use the two together.
Plug the devices or their wireless adaptors into the USB ports of the PlayStation 5.
Start using the keyboard and/or mouse instead of your games controller.
You can edit some keyboard and mouse settings by going to Settings > Devices on your PlayStation 5 once the devices are attached.
What Keyboards and Mice Are Compatible With the PlayStation 5?
The PlayStation 5 is compatible with pretty much all keyboards and mice. Some mouse and keyboard combinations may require you to wait a moment or two for the console to register them but for the most part, they simply just work.
That’s the case with both wired and wireless keyboard and mouse combinations, but there can be some minor issues with wireless devices. That’s because if both devices share a single transmitter, there may be issues with your console picking up the responses correctly. In which case, we recommend using a dedicated wireless gaming mouse or keyboard instead as they have separate transmitters.
If you use a wired solution, there are no issues with simply plugging them in and using them straight away.
What Can I Do With a Keyboard and Mouse on PlayStation 5?
The biggest advantage is you can reply to chat messages with the keyboard rather than having to use the on-screen keyboard to reply (which is far slower).
It’s also possible to play games with a mouse and keyboard, providing the game supports the device method. However, if you choose to go online, the PlayStation 5 will detect your choice of controller and solely matchmake you with PC players rather than other PlayStation 5 gamers so that everything is fair for both you and them.
What Limitations Are There to Using a Keyboard and Mouse?
As mentioned, the big one is that you can’t play with other console players online. You’ll be matched up with PC players instead which can put you at a disadvantage compared to playing versus other console players.
Also, not all games support keyboard and mouse combinations. Sony hasn’t confirmed any PlayStation 5 games that support mouse and keyboard, but there is a small selection of PlayStation 4 games that support such functionality. Remember—if these have cross-platform capabilities, you’ll be paired up with PC players rather than PlayStation 4 or 5 owners.
- Final Fantasy XIV
- War Thunder
- Elder Scrolls Online (keyboard only)
- Neverwinter (keyboard only)
- DC Universe Online (keyboard only)
- They Are Billions
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
- Call of Duty: Warzone
Generally, the keyboard and mouse combination is best for typing up messages rather than playing with. After all, PlayStation 5 games are made with the DualSense controller in mind.
