Alongside the iPhone Xs and the iPhone Xs Max, Apple also unveiled the iPhone XR — a budget iPhone with an LCD display and Face ID.
The iPhone XR shares a lot in common with the iPhone Xs but yet it makes a few compromises to keep its price in check. Unlike the iPhone X and Xs, the iPhone XR features an aluminum chassis. While it might look and feel premium, it is definitely a notch below the more premium iPhone Xs.
The design of the handset is the same as the iPhone X, though due to the use of an LCD display, the bezels are slightly thicker. Unlike the iPhone Xs, the iPhone XR features an IP67 certification. Apple will be offering the iPhone XR in Black, White, Blue, Red, Yellow, and Coral colors.
“iPhone XR helps us reach even more people with the latest iPhone innovations. It is packed with the newest technologies including a 6.1-inch Liquid Retina display that goes edge to edge, the latest TrueDepth camera with faster Face ID authentication, new 7-nanometer A12 Bionic chip with second generation Neural Engine and a 12-megapixel camera that takes advanced Portrait mode and Portrait Lighting photos,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “The new iPhone XRhas a gorgeous new aerospace-grade aluminum and glass enclosure that has IP67 protection from liquids and dust, long all-day battery life and comes in six beautiful finishes. iPhone XR makes it possible for even more people to have the great experience of the latest iPhone X technology, in beautiful new designs, at a more affordable price.”
The 6.1-inch Liquid Retina LCD display has a 1792 x 828 resolution with a 326ppi. It also features Tap to Wake, though it lacks 3D Touch. Instead, Apple has replaced it with Haptic touch which is similar to what Apple does on its MacBook Pro’s trackpad. While there’s no home button, the iPhone Xr does feature Face ID. Thankfully, its the second generation Face ID which is faster than what is found on the iPhone X.
Internally, the iPhone XR is powered by Apple’s A12 Bionic chip which is an absolute monster in terms of performance. It is the first 7nm chip and features 6.9 billion transistors, a 6-core CPU, 4-core GPU, and 8-core Neural engine.
The iPhone XR comes with a single 12MP f/1.8 aperture wide-angle shooter at its rear. Despite the single-camera setup, the iPhone XR is able to capture Portrait photos with a fake bokeh effect thanks to Focus Pixels. It also features Smart HDR and uses the same new large 1.4um sensor as seen on the iPhone Xs. The front 7MP camera is also the same as the one on the iPhone Xs. It also offers advanced bokeh along with Portrait mode with Depth control for the front-facing TrueDepth camera. The camera system is accompanied by an improved TrueTone flash.
The iPhone XR offers 90 minutes of better battery life when compared to the iPhone 8 Plus. The handset will feature LTE Advanced, improved wireless charging, Dual SIM and Bluetooth 5.0. It will be available in 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB storage variants, with its price starting from $749 and pre-orders starting from October 19.
