iPhone 11 Leaks: Everything you need to know – No USB-C and 3D Touch, New Taptic Engine, More

Some firm details around Apple’s iPhone 11 due this fall have emerged courtesy of 9to5Mac. The big tip is it will retain its Lightning port for the time being, while also getting some key upgrades to its Taptic Engine, a new front-facing camera and Apple’s next-gen A13 processor. Internally, the A13 platform carries the codename Cebu and the model number T8030.iPhone 11

Disappointing many, the iPhone 11 series will continue to feature a Lightning port instead of a USB-C port as Apple’s 2018 iPad Pro lineup.

Internally, the iPhone XS successor is known as D42 (iPhone 11), while the iPhone XS Max successor is known as D43 (iPhone 12,5). The iPhone XR’s successor is known as N104 (iPhone 12,1).

The iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max successor will continue to feature an OLED display (3x Retina), while the iPhone XR successor will feature a 2x Liquid Retina display. The display of all three iPhones will feature the same resolution as their predecessor.

New Taptic Engine

The new iPhones will ditch 3D Touch for good. Interestingly, in a bid to seemingly improve the haptic feedback, Apple will use a new taptic engine internally codenamed as leap haptics. Apple could use this new tapic engine to make up for the lack of 3D Touch. 3D Touch allows users to do things like long press on the display and then move the cursor, as well as deep press on icons to see various shortcut options. But it’s not clear how many people used this feature.

As 9to5Mac notes, iOS 13 brings Haptic Touch all iOS devices, including the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

Smart Frame

The iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max successor will feature a triple-camera system at the rear inside a rectangular hump. The design looks similar to what we have seen in the leaked renders so far. The third new camera sensor is an ultra-wide angle shooter.

Apart from capturing photos, Apple will also use the ultra-wide angle sensor to offer a feature called Smart Frame. In this, the phone will automatically capture the scene around the framed area in pictures and videos. Users will then be able to adjust the framing and make other adjustments to it after a photo is taken. The captured data, however, will not be saved and discarded after a certain point.

The front camera on the iPhone 11 series will also get an upgrade and gain support for slow-mo recording at 120fps. the wide-angle camera on the ‘iPhone 11’ camera will enable a feature called Smart Frame, that would capture the area around the subject in the frame, while in photo or video mode, which will allow user to correct perspective and crop images after clicking or shooting. For privacy reasons, the additional captured information will be retained for a limited period of time and deleted automatically afterwards.

The front camera will also receive a significant improvement in image quality along with the ability to capture 120fps slow-mo videos.

Our Take

The lack of 3D Touch on the iPhone 11 series is definitely going to bum a lot of people. Apart from that, today’s leak sheds more light on the yearly upgrades that every new iPhone release comes with. The upcoming iPhones are expected to be unveiled sometime in September this year.

What are your thoughts on the iPhone 11 based on the above leaks?
